Log-set vs. Insert
Which one is right for your existing fireplace?
An electric fireplace insert consists of a metal box which holds some sort of media package, either logs or crystals, through which LED flames are visible. An electric log-set consists of the logs only, without a metal box around them. The flames dance on either the back of your fireplace or on a panel placed in the middle of the logs.
With an insert, the metal box will need to fit into your existing fireplace opening, while leaving minimal gaps around the front of the opening. Gaps may be covered by optional trim kits, where available. With an insert, the inside of your existing fireplace will no longer be visible, and there will be glass on the front of your fireplace as part of the insert.
With a log-set, the fit can be a bit easier, as only the logs need to slide into your existing opening. Still, you need to measure the width of your opening at the depth of the log-set you have in mind. Once a log-set is installed, the inside of your existing fireplace will still be visible. There will be no glass on the front of your fireplace opening unless you add glass doors, or you keep your existing fireplace doors.
Both log-sets and inserts offer heating options. Want to learn more? We’ve summarized your options on our Stylish Blog.
